Sportive 2013 Feedback.........

A big Thank you to all who contributed in making the clubs Sportive another success.

We have also had some great feedback ,with the following examples........

Hi,

Just thought that I would contact you to thank you for organising the
route 66 event yesterday. I thoroughly enjoyed the ride which was well organised
and well marshalled. Please pass on my thanks to the many people who clearly
gave up time to make the event simple and really enjoyable for the
riders.

Thanks again.

Neil Wildman

Just a quick line to say well done and thank you for the excellent Route 66 I
took part in yesterday. The organisation, signage etc were all excellent, even
the weather did not dampen my enjoyment. Please thank EVERYONE who gave up their
time to do their bit, it was very much appreciated.

Thanks again,

SCCA-Parkers Rnd 5. Middleton, Golding & Nickless representing

North Shropshire Wheelers 25

A second win in as many days for Steve York, a brilliant first time under the hour for young Tom Garbett, and a new Series leader out of the blue - round 5 of the Parker International Series was a memorable morning's work with 10 riders beating the hour. York made his 2013 debut in the Series in the North Shropshire Wheelers' 25, covering the popular Prees - Tern Hill - Hodnet course in 56 minutes 28 seconds. e said afterwards: "It was a reasonable day for the Prees course, I was pleased with my ride".

York outpaced Tony Harvey by 69 seconds, despite the Mid Shropshire Wheeler having fresher legs. But it was the first time effort of Nova Raiders' Richard Nickless that astounded many. Never having ridden a 25 mile event before, Nickless beat the hour at first attempt despite cool conditions and a niggling south-west breeze making for hard going on the Hodnet bypass. He captured third spot on the day in 57:41, just four seconds behind Harvey - and more importantly took over the Series lead from Garbett. This is a feat many riders never achieve and shows the sheer quality of Nickless' ride, which was something special. He remarked: "I was delighted to get my first competitive 25 on the board, and with a time that exceeded my expectations if I'm being honest. The wind kicked up around Espley and on the return section, but thankfully I had the legs for the finish".

First home for the promoting team was Ian Boam, capturing 4th spot in 58:37 just a single second ahead of team mate Tim Rex. But it was the performance of Tom Garbett that drew most plaudits as the youngster beat the hour for the first time with a great ride of 59:36. Garbett commented: "I felt good and strong for three quarters of the race and dug deep to hold above the 25mph average". Despite losing his main Series lead to Nickless, Garbett holds the runner-up spot with just eight points to make up, as the youngster increased his lead in the Junior Series.

There was some great competition in the Ladies Series with three Wrekinsport riders heading the standings - two tackling the distance for the first time. It was Amanda Whitmore who came out best on the day with a terrific first effort of 1:08:55, taking the win from another first-timer Vicki Bale in 1:11:08. Despite thos Bale still heads the ladies standings.

North Shropshire Wheelers also ran a handicap competition for their riders, with Garbett tasting victory again in an adjusted 51:06, just two seconds ahead of Tim Rex.

SCCA 10 mile TT (Round 4) 20.4.13

Shropshire Cycling Clubs Association Spring 10 No.3

It was an impressive ride from young Jordan Bason to take the overall win - but it was a tremendous last gasp personal best from Richard Nickless that took the points in round 4 of the Parker International Series in the 3rd SCCA 10 at Waters Upton to narrow the gap to Series leader Tom Garbett. Unaffiliated rider Bason grabbed a clear win in 22 minutes 13 seconds, but Nickless knocked a single second off his personal best to take the maximum 20 points on offer with a fine effort of 22:50.

The Nova Raiders rider clawed two points back from Tom Garbett to at the top of the standings to pull to within just six points of the North Shropshire Wheelers' Junior in what looks like a fantastic battle for supremacy. Garbett had to be content with third spot on the day and was nearly usurp by Daniel Watts, making his first appearance in the Series this year. Garbett stopped the watch on 24:18, with Watts just a second off his pace. But Garbett had an eye on the progress of Wrekinsport's Jason Harland, with Watts' intervention adding four points to his advantage with Harland laying in third spot overall after a good ride of 24:21.

Sundorne Track Riding - Courtesy of MSW CC

A Guide to Thursday Evening at Sundorne Track

Throughout the year the club runs a weekly training session on a Thursday evening led by one or more of the club's British Cycling qualified coaches.

It's a good opportunity to do some good quality training whilst improving your bike handling skills and all in a traffic-free environment. If you are thinking about riding any road races then this training session is essential to introduce you to riding at speed in a close group.

There is plenty of car parking on site. Often the side gate is open to allow you to get down to the track. If not walk you bike through reception to access the track. You must not ride your bike within the building.

You sign on and pay a fee of £2 (£1 for juniors).

Due to the popularity of the sessions for winter 2012 we now run two 1-hour groups. The first is for beginners and those not skilled in close group riding. The later session is suitable for experienced riders only.

What happens?

Session 1 starts at 6.30pm and lasts for an hour.

After a warm-up the training may take the form of for example riding in a group doing "through and off" (i.e. drafting or slipstreaming and taking turns at the front like in the peloton), timed laps etc.

Session 2 will comprise groups riding together at speed and going through a set of race simulation scenarios. If you have attended the early session and feel ready to join the later groups then please speak to the senior club members present.

Club members often go to the Café at the Sports village afterwards.

Where does it happen?

At Shrewsbury Sports Village at Sundorne on the purpose built 1km closed cycling circuit (Sports Village website).

When do they take place?

Every Thursday night from 6:30 until 8:30pm unless the track is being used for racing. The track is floodlit after dark.

Who takes part?

We often have around 30 riders or more. Riders are of all ages (11-70 or more!), both sexes and all abilities.

What sort of bike is used?

You can ride on any roadworthy bike. Ideally you should use a road bike i.e. thin wheels and dropped handlebars.

Mountain bikes with big heavy tyres and a not aerodynamic "sit up and beg position" will sap your energy and slow you down.

Tri-bars are not allowed for safety reasons - as you can't steer or brake quickly in a group.

How fit do I need to be?

Not particularly. Just try it, you can always stop for a rest and join back in.

Rules and regulations

Unless you are trying a first session you must be a member of a cycling club. So if you try your first one and want to ride more please join the club.

The event is run under the rules of British Cycling and the session is insured under the British Cycling scheme.

Helmets are compulsory. No Helmet = No Ride.

Safety (very important)

Even though you are riding on a closed circuit you will be riding fast in close contact with other riders and so please be careful and considerate. This is training - not racing!

Guide to riding in a group......

The benefits of group riding are wide and varied and by following a few simple tips and techniques, you can make the most of your time on your bike by maximising the camaraderie, support and slipstreaming effect of riding with others.

Group riding

When riding a sportive you’ll often find yourself in a group travelling at a similar speed so here’s a few pointers from British Cycling's Coaching and Education team on how to make the most of it.

  • Ensure you are looking ahead and keeping a consistent line of travel.
  • It is important to be aware of your speed - there is no point sitting at a comfortable pace in the group and then putting the hammer down when it is your turn on the front as this will just fragment the group and most likely annoy those around you!
  • Communicate with other riders to establish your position or your intentions i.e. vocal instructions such as ‘coming through', ‘car up / down', ‘on your left' and ‘single out' are common place on the road and should be understood before setting off.
  • Hand signals perform a similar job and are just as important when passing instructions through a group from front to back.
  • Observe and anticipate other riders, other road traffic and the situations that are unfolding. Observation is not just limited to what you can see but also what you can hear too.
  • Avoid making any sudden movements, such as braking harshly or cutting across other riders. Only move if clear to do so, remember to observe and anticipate. Don't overlap wheels or force your way through.
  • Be assertive with your position; stand up if necessary to give yourself space and to prevent other riders from coming too close.
  • Be prepared to make contact, staying relaxed is the key, if you're not relaxed then when a rider makes contact you will increase your chances of crashing. Maintain a strong and relaxed position on the bike, loose shoulders with a bend in the elbow to allow for movement and contact.
  • Most of all, enjoy it! It's a great feeling sharing the work.

All riders in a group have a responsibility for the safety of both themselves and the other members of the group. Knowledge and appreciation of the do's and don'ts of group riding ensure the safety of the group while maximising the benefits and enjoyment of riding with friends.
