Nova Raiders Cycling Club Newport, Shropshire In September 2009, twelve
local cyclists completed the 450 mile Pyrenean Raid Cycle Challenge to raise
£11,000 for three charities including Macmillan Cancer Support. As a result of
this success, we decided to form the Nova Raiders cycling club specifically to
continue raising money for local & national charities and last September
were able to donate desperately-needed organisational-funds of £1,500 to
facilitate the staging of the nationally-famous Newport Nocturne cycle race –
which attracted over 14,000 spectators to the town!. In June this year we completed
a 300 mile sponsored cycle challenge from Portsmouth to Newport raising over £12,000
for the “Help for Heroes” charity.
Nova Raiders has grown in
numbers and presently has over 30 members. Riders meet at the Shell Service
Station, Newport on Tuesday & Thursday evenings at 6pm and at 9am on Sunday
morning for club runs. Typically the weekday runs are around 25 miles and the longer
Sunday run is usually between 45 & 50 miles with a cafe stop. Every effort
is made to keep the group together so, we wait for anyone who is struggling,
has a puncture or other mechanical problems. The routes vary from week to week
to give the rides variety and where possible we try to keep to country lanes. As well as club runs &
charity rides, Nova Raiders also take part in sportives & reliability rides
both at home and abroad. Simon Broad, Chairman, Nova Raiders Cycling Club |
