He has battled against it for 9 years and his family are convinced that his longevity is due to his intrinsic levels of fitness from cycling for many decades. Michael has promoted many events in Newport, including 4 editions of the National Road Race Championships in the 80's and 90's and in more recent years the Newport Nocturne. Comments from some of our 2018 riders

A small selection of the many amazing comments we received following the event on 12th May 2018.

Kudos to all the organisers, Marshalls and helpers of todays Route 66. Many many thanks for the hard work you have already put in.

Mark Sheridan

On behalf of the Newport CC Kids that road the 33 (well 40 with the cafe detour), I would like to thank Nova Raiders for a fabulous event today. The Route 33 was extremely well supported with very friendly volunteers and riders.

Matt Bramford-Hale

On behalf of NSCC's satellite club, 'Breaking Chains', I would like to say a huge thank you to the fantastic team and organisers of yesterday's Route 66 - always a brilliant event! You all made us feel so welcome. Completing this well-organised and challenging ride has given the guys in the club a massive boost of confidence and sense of achievement. Simply getting to the start line of something like this would have been unimaginable a year ago for these guys...never mind completing it with a smile on their face!

The road to recovery from addiction is always going to be tough. By giving us the chance to take part in a truly wonderful local event, surrounded by warm and friendly people in stunning scenery, you have all just made the journey that little bit more manageable. THANK YOU!

Ollie Aitken

Thank you for an absolutely brilliant Sportive. I was not fully prepared for cycling to both Everest and K2 base camps but it was fantastic! The food stations were brilliant and the staff manning them were wonderful. Brilliant route, a lot of Sportives could learn from yours. Thanks!

I've never wished to join a cycling club, however, if you were closer I would without doubt want to.

Steve Harris

To all the organisers of Route 66 and volunteers on road junctions and feed stations (you all know who you are) a big big thank you - all the hard work and support keep us all going and all your back room preparation definitely paid off xx

Julie Byrd

Quick note to offer my congratulations and thanks to all involved in organising what was a great event on Saturday. Really lovely vibe throughout. Looking forward to joining you again next year and, after sampling the beer, have a keen eye on the September event. Best of luck, Sean

The Small Print

  1. Please remember that this is not a race and the roads are not closed. The road surface can vary in condition with loose grit and pot holes. You may encounter wide agricultural vehicles on narrow lanes. Never ride more than two abreast and single file on narrow lanes. Be considerate to other road users.
  2. You should carry basic tools, inner tubes and a pump to fix punctures or mechanical problems you may experience. A basic first aid kit is also recommended. Spare inner tubes and basic spares are on sale on the day. There will be mechanical support if needed prior to the start. This support should not be relied on to fix existing problems with your bike, but to help resolve any problems that have occurred on the way to the event.
  3. It is advisable to bring lights and high visibility clothing on days where fog or rain is forecast or where light is likely to be reduced.
  4. I understand that I participate in these events entirely at my own risk and must rely on my own ability in dealing with hazards and ride in a manner that is safe for myself and others. Riders must abide by the highway code at all times. I agree that no liability whatsoever shall be attached to the organiser, promoting club, and or any official body attached to or in connection to this promotion, in respect of injury, loss or damage suffered by me, however caused. The function of the marshals is only to indicate direction and that riders must decide whether the movement is safe.
  5. A safety approved cycling helmet must be worn. No helmet, no ride.
  6. Under 16's to be accompanied by an Adult.
  7. Follow the Highway code, and please look out for each others safety.
